The Illinois 96th Infantry, commanded by Col. Thomas E. Champion and assigned to the 2nd Brigade under Whitaker, 1st Division under Cruft, and 4th Army Corps under Granger, was with its brigade temporarily attached to Geary's Division and was among the first troops to occupy the crest of Lookout Mountain, where it remained during November 25th, 1863, suffering a loss of 15.
