On Nov. 24, 1863, the 5th Ohio Infantry, part of Candy's Brigade in Geary's Division of the 12th Corps under Col. John H. Patrick, was divided when Geary's Division began its movement against Lookout Mountain. Seven companies were left on picket in Lookout Valley to guard the line of defenses, while three companies continued with Candy's Brigade and, during its assault on the mountain, protected its left flank. After the Craven House plateau was carried, these three companies were sent back with prisoners. The detachment suffered no losses.
