On Nov. 24, 1863, the 29th Ohio Infantry, in Candy's Brigade, Geary's Division, 12th Corps, under Col. William T. Fitch, formed part of the strong detail assigned to protect the lines of defense in Lookout Valley as preparations were made for the assault on Lookout Mountain. During the operations, the regiment captured several picket posts, and at one point captured a force of 130 that was seeking to relieve a picket reserve.
