The Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee, Oklahoma, preserves the art, history, and culture of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole nations in the historic Union Indian Agency building, a structure dating to the 1870s. The museum emerged from a campaign by the Da-Co-Tah Indian Club, which helped secure the building and led to the museum’s incorporation in 1955; it opened in 1966 under first president Marie L. Wadley. Over time, the building served as an agency headquarters, residence, school, orphanage, dance hall, and unused federal property before restoration. The museum is especially known for the world’s largest collection of original works by Jerome Tiger.
