Mount Baden-Powell in the Angeles National Forest of the San Gabriel Mountains was named in 1931 in honor of Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell, founder of Boy Scouting. At an elevation of 9399 feet, it is also the highest point along the Silver Moccasin Trail, over which thousands of scouts trek to high adventure. In September 1957, during the 100th anniversary of Baden-Powell, the 50th anniversary of world Scouting, and the 47th anniversary of Scouting in America, Scouts and Scouters of the Boy Scouts of America from Los Angeles Area Council, San Gabriel Valley Council, Verdugo Hills Council, Old Baldy Council, Orange Empire Area Council, San Fernando Valley Council, Crescent Bay Area Council, Northern Orange County Council, and Long Beach Area Council dedicated a monument to his memory. It expressed scout training as encouraging a boy through his open enthusiasm to develop himself as an efficient citizen and to create his own character and individual self-discipline from within as education.
