Throop Peak is a 9,142-foot summit in Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains, within the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Angeles National Forest. It commands sweeping views in opposite directions, from the Mojave Desert to the Los Angeles Basin and the ocean beyond. Named for Amos G. Throop, founder of the school that became the California Institute of Technology, the peak also forms the northwestern boundary of the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. A common route begins at Dawson Saddle on the Angeles Crest Highway and passes through high forest of Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, lodgepole pine, and white fir. Spring and fall are the favored climbing seasons.
