Mount Burnham, one of the highest peaks in the San Gabriel Mountains, stands in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness north of Glendora. Once called North Baldy Mountain or West Twin, it was officially named in 1951 for Frederick Russell Burnham, the American scout whose woodcraft teachings influenced Robert Baden-Powell and helped inspire the Boy Scouts. That legacy endures in nearby routes including the Silver Moccasin Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. Its upper slopes hold native pine forest, the area supports uncommon plants and occasional bighorn sheep and mountain lion, and its terrain includes ancient rocks and the Vincent Thrust Fault. In 1956 it became one of the Sierra Club's Signature Summits.
