Downs Carriage House
History
3
Built in Jamesport in 1840, the Downs Carriage House was given to the Society by Irving Downs in 1976. Its ground floor was converted to house the Print Shop exhibit, nicknamed the Hurricane Press Shop in honor of the famous printing press that printed the local newspaper, the Traveler, the day after the 1938 hurricane. Operated with a foot pedal, the Hurricane Press was able to run although the electricity was out. The shop is dedicated to the memory of Robert P. Long, who created it, and Herb Shultz gave the contents of his father's print shop to complete the Society's collection of printing materials.
