Eagle Peak, in the Absaroka Range of northwestern Wyoming, rises 11,372 feet and is the highest point in Yellowstone National Park, on the boundary with Shoshone National Forest. Its name has been attributed either to geologist Arnold Hague in 1885, who thought its shape resembled a spread eagle, or to Jack Newell in 1878 after he killed a golden eagle there. A volcanic remnant of an ancient stratovolcano, it is composed of Eocene volcaniclastic rock and bears lasting evidence of glaciation. Remote and difficult to reach, it anchors rugged backcountry that supports alpine tundra and important wildlife habitat, including an elk migration corridor.
