Table Mountain is a prominent summit in Yellowstone National Park’s northwestern Wyoming backcountry, standing 11,069 feet in the Absaroka Range southeast of Yellowstone Lake. Though it is the park’s third-highest peak, it is the highest located entirely within Yellowstone because the two taller summits lie on the park boundary. Named for its broad, table-like shape, it received its descriptive name from the U.S. Geological Survey in 1885 and official federal adoption in 1930. Formed from volcanic material during the early Eocene about 50 to 55 million years ago, it rises steeply above nearby creeks and is part of Yellowstone’s rugged eastern high country.
