Mount Schurz, an 11,007-foot mountain in Yellowstone National Park’s Absaroka Range, is the park’s second-highest peak and one of its most prominent high-country summits. Its recorded naming history begins with the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition of 1871, when Henry D. Washburn first called it Mount Doane. Geologist Arnold Hague later reassigned that name to another Absaroka peak, and in 1885 he renamed this summit for Carl Schurz. Schurz had served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1877 to 1881, was the first Interior Secretary to visit Yellowstone, and strongly supported the national park movement, giving the mountain a lasting link to Yellowstone’s early protection and development.
