Constructed on a ridge with a southern exposure, this long building had five sections or wards with a capacity of 446 patients. It contained hundreds of windows to obtain maximum sunlight in the rooms, an important component of the recovery plan. Most patients were allowed moderate exercise. It had a communal dining room with an adjoining kitchen and a 300 seat auditorium used for church services, movies, and singing groups. The ground floor held the occupational therapy department, sanatorium bakery, tinsmith and carpenter shops, and employees' quarters. William H. Maybury said on November 11, 1921, that the buildings were designed to eliminate the bare effect that made many hospitals bleak and dreary and to make patients regard the place not as an institution but as a temporary home with surroundings as homelike as possible.
