Smalls Falls
Nature
Smalls Falls is a waterfall on the Sandy River in western Maine, in Township E of Franklin County. Instead of a single drop, it forms a compact series of falls and cascades totaling 54 feet. From top to bottom, the river passes over a 12-foot slide or horsetail, a 25-foot segmented fall, a 14-foot horsetail, and a final 3-foot cascade, with pools between the drops creating its stepped character. Easy access from a rest area on Maine Route 4, along with parking, picnic tables, pit toilets, and varied rock formations, has made it a well-known scenic stop in the region.
