Devil's Den Preserve in Weston and Redding, Connecticut, spans 1,746 acres of wooded, rocky terrain, making it the largest preserve in Fairfield County. Its name grew from local folklore tied to the area's charcoal-making era, when workers pointed to a hoof-shaped mark in a boulder as the Devil's footprint. The landscape has been used by people for hunting for at least 5,000 years, later becoming part of a lumbering and charcoal-burning district and a place where local residents were thought to have hidden during the British march to Danbury in 1777. Created in its modern form by Katharine Ordway in 1966 and enlarged through 1968, it is now a heavily visited preserve rich in trails, plant life, and wildlife.
