Great Wicomico River Light
Transportation
Great Wicomico River Light stood at the mouth of the Great Wicomico River in Virginia, south of the Potomac River on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay. First lit in 1889, it served for decades as a navigational aid along this busy waterway, helping mark the river’s entrance for vessels traveling the Chesapeake. The light was deactivated in 1967. Its long period of service underscores the importance of guiding maritime traffic through this part of the bay and safely identifying the approach to the Great Wicomico River.
