Burney Mountain is a large lava dome complex in northeastern California’s Cascade Range, near the town of Burney in eastern Shasta County. Rising to 2,397 meters beside Crater Peak and Magee Peak, it was formed by Pleistocene volcanic activity and last erupted about 230,000 years ago. Its two craters open to the east, and its great mass makes it the largest Quaternary dome in the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with an estimated volume of about 9 cubic kilometers. In 2014, the Eiler Fire burned the mountain’s eastern side, destroying 21 structures and injuring 11 people, mostly in the Hat Creek area.
