North Carolina was colonized in 1585-87 by the first English settlers in America, was permanently settled about 1650, and was the first to vote readiness for independence on April 12, 1776. Tennessee was settled before 1770 by North Carolina-Virginia pioneers, was ceded by North Carolina to the United States in 1789, and was admitted to the Union in 1796.
