Nearby Woodland Beach flourished as a grand resort from the late 1800's to the early 1900's, drawing as many as a thousand visitors per day by water, rail, and stage from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other East Coast areas. The resort offered a grand hotel, dance hall, live orchestra entertainment, and facilities for swimming, boating, fishing, and hunting. By the late 1800's, attractions also included a bowling alley, amusement park rides, a merry-go-round, and a roller-coaster-like ride called the "razzle-dazzle." One of the best known steamships serving Woodland Beach was the double paddle-wheeler Thomas Clyde, which made a 3-hour daily trip from Philadelphia, with a stop in Wilmington, carrying as many as 3000 passengers at a time. Massive storms, including the great tidal wave of 1878 and another in 1914, contributed to the eventual downfall of Woodland Beach as a resort destination, but even after the grand hotel and other attractions were gone, people still came to Woodland Beach to eat, drink, boat, and fish, and Frank's Place became one of the mid-1900's hotspots.
