Francis J. Clark was the only Medal of Honor recipient from the 28th Infantry Division in World War II. Serving with Company K, 109th Infantry, he was honored for repeated bravery in action near the Our River in Kalborn, Luxembourg, and Sevenig, Germany, from Sept. 12-18, 1944. Although wounded, he refused evacuation and continued to rescue and encourage several leaderless platoons under fire, even routing a full company of heavily armed Germans. By assuming command and aiding stranded and wounded comrades in the face of enemy fire, Sgt. Clark put fighting heart into the hard-pressed men of Company K.
