The Camano City School District #18 was formed in 1903, and this classic one-room schoolhouse was built around 1905 to serve the children of the surrounding community of about 300 families. In 1911, Camano Land & Lumber Company, which employed many Camano City residents in local timber work, deeded the land to the district for $1. The school's first teacher was Maude Hayden of rural Iowa, who traveled west by rail to Seattle and then reached Camano Island by what she called a very scary boat ride; archives show that her salary was $40 per month. Beyond its regular classes, the building often served as an informal gathering place for public meetings and events. In 1936, the Camano Island and Stanwood school districts consolidated, and the schoolhouse shifted to frequent use as the Camano City Community Hall, serving as a polling place, courthouse, and site for meetings, celebrations, and entertainment. The Camano Sparklers, the women's auxiliary of Fire District #1, became the building's managers. In December 2012, the Camano Schoolhouse Foundation purchased the building and its half-acre site from Camano Fire and Rescue District #1 to manage, rent, and preserve it as a public gathering place for educational and entertaining community events and family celebrations.
