Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island’s southwest shore preserves the former Cama Beach Resort, a 1934 fishing retreat whose cabins and waterfront setting evoke Washington’s resort era. The shoreline had been used by Native Americans for thousands of years before European settlement, and the discovery of human remains and artifacts later highlighted the site’s cultural sensitivity. The Stradley family kept the resort operating until 1989, after which the property was sold to Washington State and rehabilitated as a park offering recreation and historic character. In 2024, all 33 historic cabins were permanently closed because of septic problems, repair costs, shoreline protection needs, and the site’s sensitive history.
