Mount Silliman, an 11,193-foot peak in the high Sierra Nevada, stands on the boundary of Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks atop Silliman Crest on the Kings-Kaweah Divide. Named during the Whitney Survey for Yale chemistry professor Benjamin Silliman Jr., it reflected both scientific esteem and William Brewer’s personal connection as a former student. The first recorded ascent came on June 28, 1864, when Clarence King, James Gardiner, Richard Cotter, and Brewer reached the summit. The mountain also lends its name to nearby pass, creek, meadow, and lake, and is notable for rare foxtail pine growing just below its summit.
