Mount Garfield is a 13,074-foot summit in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, within the Weminuche Wilderness of San Juan National Forest near Silverton. Its runoff feeds tributaries of the Animas River, and its dramatic relief makes it a prominent landmark above both U.S. Route 550 and the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The mountain’s steep west face rises more than 4,300 feet in about a mile, giving it an abrupt profile. Geologically, it is a glacial horn in the Uncompahgre Formation, made of ancient metamorphosed marine and river-deposited rocks above older plutons, and its elevation gives it a harsh alpine subarctic climate.
