Graystone Peak is a 13,489-foot mountain in the Needle Mountains of southwestern Colorado, within the Weminuche Wilderness of San Juan National Forest. About 8.5 miles south-southeast of Silverton, it rises dramatically above the Animas River and Tenmile Creek, with runoff feeding Animas tributaries. Visible from U.S. Route 550 near Molas Lake, it shares a rugged skyline with nearby Electric Peak and Mount Garfield. The peak has an alpine subarctic climate with long snowy winters and brief summers. Geologically, it belongs to the ancient Uncompahgre Formation, a thick sequence of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. Officially recognized in federal naming records, it remains notable as one of Colorado’s remote “thirteeners.”
