Highland Recreation Area is a 5,900-acre protected landscape in northern Oakland County, Michigan, west of Pontiac, known for its forests, wetlands, kettle lakes, and low moraines called “mountains.” Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for light camping and day use, it includes about 45 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Its highest point is Mount Kanzer at 1,150 feet above sea level. Within it, the 721-acre Haven Hill Natural Area was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976 for preserving all of southern Michigan’s principal forest types in a relatively small, largely undisturbed area. First preserved by Edsel Ford as part of his estate, Haven Hill passed to state care after his death in 1943.
