In Crawfordsville, Indiana, the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County occupies Indiana’s first Carnegie library building, which opened in 1902 after local leaders secured Andrew Carnegie’s support in 1901 for a larger public library. The community provided a site near the town square and committed annual operating funds, meeting the conditions of Carnegie’s grant. For more than a century, the building served as Crawfordsville’s public library until the library moved across the street in 2005. Reused as a community museum when it opened in June 2007, the building continues its civic and educational role through exhibits, preservation, research, and public programs focused on Montgomery County’s heritage.
