Rim Rock Drive is a 23-mile scenic road through Colorado National Monument, following the upper rim of canyons between the Fruita area and near Grand Junction. Chosen in 1931 by National Park Service engineer Thomas W. Secrest and planned in 1932 for maximum scenic effect in the Rustic style, it became a major Depression-era construction project. Crews from the Works Progress Administration, Public Works Administration, and Civilian Conservation Corps built most of it largely by hand, using extensive drilling and blasting and boring three tunnels through rock. Work paused during the Second World War and the road was completed in 1950; its full length is now a historic district valued for both engineering and landscape design.
