Simone Mountain is a summit in Ashe County in northwestern North Carolina that rises 4,304 feet and ranks as the state's 574th-highest mountain. Long known as Mulatto Mountain, a name said to refer to the color of its soil, it was renamed in February 2021 to honor Nina Simone, the North Carolina-born musician and civil rights activist who lived from 1933 to 2003. The mountain is also known for mineral occurrences, including copper, gold, and silver ores. Its importance today rests both on its place in North Carolina's high country and on the renaming that connected it to a major cultural figure.
