West Mountain Observatory, on West Mountain near West Mountain, Utah, serves as Brigham Young University’s off-campus observing site. It opened in 1981 after light pollution made the university’s Orson Pratt Observatory less useful, giving BYU a darker location for astronomical research. Early work with the new 0.9-meter telescope included imaging intrinsic variable stars and high-mass X-ray binaries. The observatory’s equipment has evolved from an original 0.6-meter reflecting telescope to a 0.9-meter reflector installed in 2009, alongside 0.5-meter and 0.3-meter reflectors in separate domes. Research there has included light-curve analysis of Delta Scuti variable stars and searches for pre-main-sequence stars through H-alpha emission.
