James T. Saban Lookout is a distinctive fire lookout in Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest near Ten Sleep, built in 1942 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Unlike the usual tall tower, it is a compact 14-by-14-foot stone-and-wood building with a high roof, designed to watch over wildfire-prone country. It served in fire detection until 1972, when aircraft replaced staffed lookouts. The lookout was later renamed for James Torrey Saban, a Forest Service worker and Civilian Conservation Corps foreman who died with seven others in the 1937 Blackwater Fire near Ten Sleep. Its 2016 National Register listing recognizes both its unusual design and its ties to regional fire-control history and tragedy.
