Bomber Mountain in Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains, near Cloud Peak, was named for the crash of a B-17F Flying Fortress during the Second World War. On June 28, 1943, the bomber Scharazad left Oregon for Nebraska en route to England, but after a report near Powder River, Wyoming, no further message came. Searches in 1943 and 1944 failed to locate it, and the wreckage was not found until August 12, 1945, when two cowboys spotted it on a ridge. The ten crewmen’s bodies were recovered, and in 1946 the previously unnamed ridge was officially given its memorial name.
