Cloud Peak is the highest summit in Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains, reaching 13,171 feet in the Cloud Peak Wilderness of Bighorn National Forest. Its 7,077-foot rise above surrounding terrain gives it the greatest topographic prominence in the state, exceeding that of taller Gannett Peak by one foot. On the border of Johnson and Big Horn counties, it is the highest point in both. Climbers usually approach from the west on 24-mile round trips from Battle Park or West Tensleep. A deep cirque on the northeast side contains Cloud Peak Glacier, regarded as the Bighorns’ last active glacier. Today it is a leading destination for hikers and climbers and one of the contiguous United States’ most distinctive summits.
