Thompson Peak, in Trinity County, California, rises 9,001 feet as the highest summit in the Trinity Alps Wilderness and the second-highest peak in Northern California west of the Cascades. Perched on a granite ridge with nearby Wedding Cake, it has steep north and east faces, a gentler southwest slope, and permanent snowfields in its north cirque and below the east face. The mountain’s north side also holds the Thompson Glacier, where exposed ice and crevasses appear late in the season. As both the range’s high point and a defining landmark, it is a prominent objective commonly climbed by the long, strenuous South Ridge route from Canyon Creek Trail.
