Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, nicknamed "The Georgia Peach," began fishing at Oxford's waters, including Stony Lake, in 1906 and returned for more than a decade, later bringing his wife and children. During a July 1907 visit, he was accompanied by Willie Heston and Dan McGugin, both former players on the University of Michigan's "point-a-minute" football teams. In July 1915, the Cobb family spent a weekend at the home of local businessman Charles L. Randall, and after Cobb caught about 20 bass at one of Oxford's lakes, 5-year-old Ty Cobb Jr. said, "My pa is a dandy fishman." His fishing skill was praised again in 1916. Cobb's time in Oxford also drew him onto the baseball field when John G. Kessell, owner of the Oxford Opera House, persuaded the Tigers' center fielder to play for Oxford's team. In August 1906, Cobb played three games in an Oxford uniform as the team lost to Bay City and defeated Imlay City and the Cadillacs of Detroit; six hundred people attended the Imlay City game, and his two-bagger in the sixth inning won it.
