County commissioners ordered the replacement of an unsafe bridge over the Big Vermillion River at Eugene in 1873. Joseph J. Daniels of Rockville built the new bridge that year with a Burr truss design, a 180 foot span, and the existing abutments. It was closed to vehicle traffic in 1974 and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
