Cherry Springs State Park, an 82-acre park in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Plateau within Susquehannock State Forest, combines a deep human and environmental history with national recognition for astronomy. Historically recorded Native inhabitants included the Susquehannocks, followed by Seneca hunters, while European-American settlement arrived slowly through rough forested terrain. A path opened in the early 1800s grew into a travel route with tavern and hotel service, but logging, fire, and erosion heavily damaged the area. State forest acquisition and park development followed, including Civilian Conservation Corps construction during the Great Depression. In recent decades, exceptionally dark skies have made Cherry Springs a major destination for stargazing, education, recreation, and annual public events.
