Eagles Nest Wilderness is a protected mountain backcountry in Colorado’s southern Gore Range within White River National Forest, established in 1976 and spanning 135,114 acres with about 180 miles of trails. The range’s name recalls Sir George Gore’s massive 1854 and 1855 hunting expedition, guided by Jim Bridger, which became notorious for its scale and destruction of wildlife. Later, the mountains attracted gold and silver prospectors, leaving traces such as diggings, tailings, and ruins including the former Boss Mine. Today the area is known for rugged alpine terrain, high peaks like Mount Powell and Eagles Nest, and an extensive trail system.
