When lighthouses first operated, sperm whale oil used to fuel the lamps was kept in the basement. In the late 1800s, however, kerosene was introduced as fuel for the lights, and it was too flammable and dangerous to store in the lighthouse, so a separate brick building had to be constructed to hold the kerosene.
