Mission Point Light stands at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse Bay, built in 1870 to warn mariners away from dangerous shoals and serving as an active navigational aid for 63 years. An exact copy of the now-lost Mama Juda Light, it combined a square tower and dwelling, its elevated site helping its Fifth Order Fresnel lens shine 13 miles. Erosion has long threatened both dune and building. Decommissioned in 1933, it was replaced in 1938 by a buoy light on the shoal. Now part of Old Mission State Park, the restored lighthouse opened to the public in 2008 and remains a major destination.
