Otway Burns was born in Onslow County, N.C., in 1775 and died at Portsmouth, N.C., in 1850. A sailor, soldier, and statesman, he was North Carolina's foremost son in the War of 1812-15. This town was named for him. He guarded well the seas, and the mountains honor him.
