Third Falls, also called Baker Falls, was the most heavily industrialized of the Royal River’s four waterfalls in Yarmouth, Maine, where a concentrated drop near navigable water drew settlers and powered mills for centuries. Buildings rose here by 1805, and the site supported grist, carding, nail, scythe, axe, and fulling mills before becoming especially significant for papermaking. Established in 1864, the paper operation expanded under later owners into a ten-building complex spanning the river and reaching Factory Island. By 1909 it was reputedly the world’s largest pulp mill of its kind. The mill closed in 1923, and later demolition and park development transformed the site, though remnants remain visible.
