Whitewater State Park is a 2,700-acre Minnesota park in the southeastern blufflands that preserves part of the Whitewater River amid rocky bluffs, deep valleys, coulees, and spring-fed trout streams. Its distinctive landscape reflects limestone and dolomite bedrock, the Driftless Area, and karst conditions that shape both scenery and water flow. Much of the park’s built environment dates to 1930s New Deal work relief projects; a 536-acre historic district with 29 contributing properties is recognized for architecture, recreation, landscape architecture, and government. In August 2007, severe Midwest flooding destroyed bridges, heavily damaged facilities and utilities, and forced the park to close until partial reopening in March 2008.
