Prince William's Parish Church, often called Sheldon after William Bull I's plantation, was built about 1751-1757 as an Anglican church and was primarily paid for by Lieutenant Governor William Bull I, who is buried there. The church was partially burned in 1779 during the American Revolution when local Loyalists burned it in a raid by General Augustine Prevost, and its interior and roof were rebuilt in 1825-26. Although many area residents in 1865 and many people afterward believed that Federal troops burned Sheldon Church during the last months of the Civil War, it was actually dismantled by local freedmen about 1865-67.
