Old Sheldon Church Ruins in northern Beaufort County, South Carolina, preserves the roofless walls of Prince William’s Parish Church, built between 1745 and 1753 in the English Georgian style. Known for its durable masonry and classical design, the church endured repeated destruction yet remained standing as a shell among live oaks and graves. Tradition says it was burned by the British in 1779, rebuilt in 1826, and destroyed again in 1865 during Sherman’s campaign, though an 1866 letter claimed it was instead gutted for reusable materials. The ruins also contain Governor William Bull’s remains and remain a notable Lowcountry landmark with an annual service continuing since 1925.
