Throgs Neck Light stood at Throggs Neck in the Bronx on the northeastern side of Fort Schuyler, marking the northern side of the entrance from Long Island Sound into the East River and helping vessels avoid nearby rocks. First established as a wooden lighthouse in 1827, it was removed during construction of the fort, replaced by another wooden tower in 1835, then succeeded in 1890 by a white iron skeletal tower with a black lantern. An oil house followed in 1896, and in 1906 a red brick tower replaced the skeletal light. Discontinued in 1934, it long served a vital navigational role at this narrow, busy gateway.
