The first settlement here began in 1710, Newbury Parish was incorporated in 1754, and the Town of Brookfield was incorporated in 1788. Pioneer families associated with the community included Dunning, Peck, Hawley, Smith, Northrop, Ruggles, Dibble, Merwin, Baldwin, Blackmanstarr, and Wheeler.
