Founded in 1902 by local landowner W. S. Wilkerson when the Rock Island Railroad built west, Groom was named for Col. B. B. Groom, an 1880s agent of the Francklyn Land & Cattle Co. who was the first to try power farming on the Plains. The town became a hub of a rich farming and ranching area.
