Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec, Maine, occupies the easternmost point of land in the continental United States, where forests, bogs, and steep Atlantic headlands surround West Quoddy Head Light. Established in 1808, the lighthouse became the nation’s easternmost light, warning ships away from cliffs, ledges, and Sail Rock in a fog-prone stretch of coast. The present red-and-white striped tower, built in 1858, remains active under United States Coast Guard care and still uses its original third-order Fresnel lens. The park also preserves five miles of trails, rare plant habitat, and a site notable for first U.S. sunrises near the equinoxes.
