West Quoddy Head Light stands at Lubec, Maine, on the eastern edge of the United States mainland, overlooking Quoddy Narrows, where ships pass between Lubec and Campobello Island into Passamaquoddy Bay and nearby river harbors. Authorized in 1806 and completed in 1808, it was built to guide vessels through this important passage, with a fog bell added in 1820. The present station dates largely from an 1858 rebuilding. Known for its red and white horizontal stripes, the lighthouse has a circular brick tower and a rare 3rd order Fresnel lens. Still active, the station includes historic support buildings, and the former keeper’s house now serves as a museum and visitor center.
