Lubec Channel Light in Lubec, Maine, was built to guide vessels through a dredged channel linking the Bay of Fundy with Eastport and the St. Croix River, serving the port communities of Lubec, Eastport, and Calais in difficult tidal waters near the Canada–United States border. Recommended in 1883, authorized in 1888, and placed in service in 1890, it was automated in 1939. The lighthouse is one of Maine’s three surviving sparkplug lights, with a compact cylindrical iron design rising 53 feet above mean high water. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, it was sold into private ownership in 2007.
